The 2022 edition of EASA’s Annual Safety Review is now available online! Based on data up until the end of 2021, the Annual Safety Review for 2022 provides both a statistical summary of aviation safety in the EASA Member States (MS) and identifies the most important safety challenges faced by European aviation today.
Designed to inform the European public of the general safety level in the field of civil aviation, the Annual Safety Review brings together in one place a wealth of safety information. This important publication looks at safety trends and statistics for commercial air transport aircraft, helicopters, sailplanes, hot air balloons, aerodromes and ground handling, air traffic management, and air navigation services, plus more.
Despite COVID-related restrictions challenging the industry throughout 2021, the European aviation system has remained robustly safe. However, there is still much to do to achieve and sustain safety. To that point, this year’s review shows that the top risk areas for CAT operations remain airborne collision, runway excursion, and collision on the runway.
New challenges have also arisen in recent months due to the unanticipated surge in demand for air travel, with traffic in Europe now back up to around 85% of 2019 levels. This recovery has been severely challenged by the unavailability of qualified and experienced staff at various key stages in the passenger process, particularly at the airport. As a result of these problems and delays, there is greater stress and fatigue for air personnel, including pilots, which poses a significant safety risk and decreased performance.
Over the past few years, the EASA has become a key player in safety investigation follow-up within Europe. This has also been reflected in the establishment of a robust and rigorous process for the safety recommendations received. By taking a methodical approach to investigatory work and providing recommendations, the 2022 Annual Safety Review helps to ensure lessons are learned and prevent future occurrences.
