While a tightening of travel restrictions around the world dampened air travel in early 2021, indicators demonstrate that air travel is poised to increase this summer. As a key example, daily bookings from UK to Greece and Spain for the period of July – August more than tripled following the news that UK has created a roadmap to ease lockdown restrictions. Although these numbers are 50% lower than pre-crisis levels in 2019, despite uncertainties this behavior increase illustrates a pent-up demand for air travel and is a positive signal for the industry.
Laying the Foundation for a Meaningful Recovery
According to IATA, progress in vaccinations in countries around the world and the removal of travel restrictions are fundamental to laying the foundation for a meaningful recovery leading to a sharp rise in international travel. To that point, better coordination between governments to restart international travel will be critical in achieving widespread recovery.
