A cover letter is a one-page document which can accompany your CV. Although not always required for pilot positions, it can be good to include one with your application as it details a small part of your experience. If you are interested in creating one, then keep reading!
Generally, a cover letter is specific to the position or company to which you are applying. You can create a basic cover letter and edit it to suit different companies or positions. The benefits of creating a cover letter is that you can use it to highlight your skills and experience, and include things which aren’t normally part of your CV.
Research the airline
Explain why they should hire you
Show your interest in the airline and the position
Show that you are enthusiastic
Keep it brief, approximately one A4 page.
Copy your CV
Use a format that is a business style letter
Ramble on without direction
Show what you can’t do or what your weaknesses are
Speak about money and other benefits they can offer you or what you want
Remember to keep your language professional and to not use abbreviations or text language. Use a simple font style such as Calibri or Arial in size 11 or 12, and make sure the colour of the font is black on a white background.
Dear Ms. Kenna,
I’m writing to apply for the position of A330 Captain, as advertised on the CAE careers page. I have more than three years of experience as an A330 Captain and have a total of 3,500 PIC flight hours on type, I have an additional 9,300 A320 hours 5,000 of which are PIC. I believe I am ready to move to an airline such as Airline 123 where the standards are very high.
In the job posting, it was mentioned that having a Type Rating Instructor’s license would be beneficial. I am a TRI on the A320 and would be more than willing to train as a TRI on the A330 also.
When I saw the job opening on CAE, I knew it was the perfect opportunity for me as Airline 123 is an airline I have wanted to work at for many years. I’ve included my CV, so you can learn more about my educational background and my work experience.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to email me or call my cell phone at +353 87 1234567. I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
John Smith.
