A320 First Officer and CAE Instructor, William Khalil, created a video for all those in our industry who lost the office they love during these difficult times. Entitled, “Return to the Skies” Will talks about the motivation behind developing this amazing video and what went into producing it.
As a pilot and instructor, I feel that I was on the front lines of the pandemic with many others I know in the industry. When COVID-19 hit many of our friends and colleagues were affected. Some were furloughed and some lost their jobs. So, the idea was to make a video to honor those who lost their jobs and support everyone as they wait to return to flying. The end result is a music video that combines expressive dancing with aviation footage and music that captures the spirit of the message.
I had help from my friends and colleagues in making the video happen. For example, one of my friends is a professional dancer. She found a really nice idea for the dance sequences and asked her friend to dance in the video as well. Also, one of my friends is a cameraman and he volunteered his time to shoot the footage, which we did in one day near the Brussels airport. We combined footage of the dancing with cockpit footage and approaches and landings to produce the video, which is 3 minutes and 30 seconds in length.
A big part of the video is the music. We chose the song, “Memories” by WAVE because it speaks to our memories of being in the air and flying, seeing the world from the sky and having the privilege of carrying passengers to their destinations. We are all missing things right now, and the song emphasizes the fact that we really miss our jobs and we want to return to the skies as soon as possible. It was the perfect song for the video.
We enjoyed making the video and hope that people like it and take away the message that there are still good things ahead of us.
