Online assessments are used by airlines as part of the recruitment process to assess mental capabilities, behavioural style, personality and skills These tests are usually designed around competencies that all pilots should acquire during their professional career. Test are often adapted to test different competencies in line with airlines requirements.
This is usually made up of 4 elements that will test your mental abilities:
Abstract Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning
Numerical Reasoning
Logical Reasoning
For pilots, this is usually a technical test on aviation knowledge. If you hold an aircraft type, then you should expect some technical questions based on that aircraft type. It will be important to check with your recruiter.
It is hard to study for these tests as they are based on your personality. They are broken down in to different competencies. Two of the most common competences they ask questions on are below:

Make sure you know what kind of test you are taking so you can prepare accordingly
Do some practice skills/aptitude tests
Ensure you have plenty of time to do the test, so you are not rushing
Ensure you are in a quiet room with no distractions
Turn your phone off
Do it when you have the most energy (mid-morning)
Ensure the room is bright and you have a glass of water with you to stay hydrated
Make sure to have it done with in the time limit and before the date it is due
Read and understand the test guidelines before starting
