At application stage for a pilot position, you will often be asked to give two or three references. These references will be contacted at offer stage and should not be contacted prior to that without your consent.
You may also be asked to give written references, which you can obtain from your previous employers. They will give you a reference letter which will state the dates you worked there and the number of hours you flew while employed by that airline.
If you are an experienced pilot, you will be required to give a reference from your previous airline. You will need to choose someone who knows you and knows what your role and experience was in that airline. We recommend having a minimum of 2 references on hand. If you are a pilot looking for your first pilot position, we advise getting a reference from your flight school. Make sure whomever you choose is dependable.

Ensure you ask if you can use them as a reference before you put them down as one. Try to ask ahead of time, as this can help speed up your application process. Make sure that they feel comfortable giving you a reference. You will need to confirm that they are reachable by phone and email, so we recommend you call and email them to check that you have the correct contact information. Maintain a relationship with these people so you can use them again further down the line. Don’t forget to thank them for giving you a reference.
If you cannot use the same reference again or yours have changed, be sure to update your reference list as needed. We recommend creating and saving a list with the referees’ email address, telephone number, job title, and airline. When leaving an airline, ask them for a written reference and keep them all in a folder so you can provide them as needed. Ensure that the written references are on headed paper and are signed, stamped and dated to show that they are authentic.
